FreeSpace

FreeSpace is an artistic project. The idea was to bring back some of my childhood memories of when my siblings and I used to play with creating an imaginative and surreal world where we lived many adventures.

The history:
The name FreeSpace was my brother's idea. I believe that he got this name from a '90s game that he used to play, but we repurposed the expression to be our own Free Space. Every time we pronounced those words we would let go of our imagination.

When the idea came to life:
In 2013, after learning Blender I engaged in a project called "A Arte se completa no fruidor" (Art is completed in the enjoyer), which brings art to a range of students, from primary to high school. Other artists and I engaged in this project bringing our own artwork to be exposed in the school's gallery.

FreeSpace was also exposed in the same year in an art centre in the city called CCBN - Centro Cultural Bernardo Mascarenhas, which increased the visibility of the project into a bigger audience.

What I learned:
Looking back on this project I can see how much I improved my modelling skills. At that time I remember that modelling something organic was a real challenge, and I really enjoyed creating all textures, some were from photos, and some were digitally painted.

Despite that, it is not a perfect project to be displayed, and the render is very dated. but I like spontaneity and I think it is a good example of how much I improved in those years.
